El escándalo #NOSON64
After hurricane Maria made landfall on September 2017, the Puerto Rican government’s official version stated that the catastrophe resulted in a total of 64 deaths. (see news) Esta conclusión no se basó en cálculo estadístico o protocolo alguno que validara la cantidad de muertes relacionadas y por demasiado tiempo se intentó aminorar esta cifra.
This conclusion was not based on any statistical calculation or protocol that could validate the number of deaths related to the event, and the attempts to minimize the body count went on for a long time.
Recently, according to new studies, that number changed to 4,645 victims who lost their lives as a result of lack of procedures focused on protecting the lives of our population followed by the natural disaster. The study was conducted by professionals of Harvard University, with the support of the faculty and students of Universidad Carlos Albizu, and published on the New England Journal of Medicine on May 29th, 2018. (see results here)
Faced with this administrative irresponsibility and negligence from the government in failing to provide more accurate and reasonable scenarios, now, we fret about it, as these deaths can only outrage us even more. We should become indignant, we should be better informed and we must take action!
